We take the tempo up a notch or two as we delve into the crates and pull out some deep disco with a sprinkling of house. A couple of scarce disco 45s to start off then Mr Ashley Beedle’s ace re-edit of the super rare Tumblack from a few years ago. Kenny Dixon Junior flexes his sampling muscles and rips up Ten City’s Satisfaction from the Foundation LP. The mysterious Band of Small Men turn in a Philly influenced instrumental put through the AIGT mincer before we get down to some block rocking boogie and funk. Things turn a bit jazzy with the sublime Moving Finger from Dorothy Ashby and we continue in the vein with Linkwood Family’s recently reissued EP on Firecracker. Louie Vega turns in his version of Candido’s Thousand Fingered Man before Larry Levan’s remix of Sparkles Handsome Man, I don’t think this was ever officially released, I’m playing this off the Salsoul Comp, Larry Levan’s Greatest Mixes Vol 2 (there never was a Vol 1 so don’t bother looking). Who knows who Margrette Trotter was but so had a bash at Billy Paul’s Only The Strong Survive, I’ve got a stack more Philly cover versions for the next Versions mix, coming soon. Pacy modern soul from Brown Sugar before we finish with some good old fashioned house music from Jovonn, keeping it super soulful just the way we like it.

Podcast 12
A little southern soul, a little philly soul and a little more make up this weeks podcast. The Jezebel LP by Mary McCreary features contributions from Merry Clayton and Jose Feliciano, apart from the title track the rest of the LP is a little weak, the cover is terrible but somehow it comes together on Jezebel. Likewise the Norma Jenkins LP is a one-tracker for me. Some more Philly flavour firstly from PIR favourites the Jones Girls this time on a Curtom promo 45, then a quick AIGT reshuffle of Ace Spectrum’s Keep On Holdin On. Smoke’s Have I Really Lost You sounds like vintage 70’s philly but is actually from the Mid West.
Geraldine Hunt (mother of Freddie James) is better known for her hit Can’t Fake The Feeling on Prism records, here we have the London 2-step underground classic Undercover Lover, tucked away on the B-side of It Doesn’t Only Happen At Night. More 2-step from Shirley Brown’s Love Starved, it’s also worth seeking out her eponymous LP from 1977 on Arista ( recently re-issued by Soul Brother Records) which contains the All In Good Time favorite, A Mighty Good Feeling
We‘ve also got the Lamont Dozier produced Zingara LP from1981, I Surrender features vocals from James Ingram as well as the beautifully soulful Look At the Boy from Jean Plum (more from her to come in later podcasts).
No disco, no house this week, well you can’t have it all, see you next time…

Tyrone Edwards: Can’t Get Enough Of You (Invictus 7”)

Back again bringing you the supersoulful sounds of an April Fool’s special.
Kicking of in style with a woman who surely can do no wrong, Aretha Franklin with the Burt Bacarach penned April Fool which is tucked away on the flip of All The King’s Horses.
Just how many versions of Can’t Hide Love are there? Not enough in my opinion, here we have Isaac Hayes and Dionne Warwick’s live version which incorporates a bit of Love To Love You Baby into the bargain, I’m sure we’ll squeeze in another few versions over the coming months.
Elsewhere we have blistering lo-fi funk from Alex Williams and The Mustangs, perfect modern soul from Greg Perry and feel good Northern funk from Jack Hammer’s rarity Swim. Karriem’s I Love You is another hard to find 12” with a lovely picture sleeve, shame I can’t fit it in my scanner.
UK listeners will remember Swing Out Sister who had a number of top tn hits in the 80’s, here there provide a bit of a surprise with the Frankie Knuckles remix of Not Gonna Change.
Next podcast will feature a lovely guest mix from the Rendition of Soul show (AKA Mark Jordan) of www.futurebeatradio.com I’ve had a sneak preview and it’s a top quality selection of modern day soul, just how we like it. Expect a further update later this week.

Jae Mason: Cloud Of Sunshine (Tender Man, Buddah LP)
Keeping it soulful all in godd time oresents part two of the Buddah Records mix. Sticking to the later brown Buddah label we kick off with a cheapie 7” from Gladys Knight, well worth a couple of quid in anyone’s book. After leaving Motown, Gladys Knight signed up with Buddah and released a couple of big hit records such as Midnight Train To Georgia as well as some records which never achieved the critical acclaim that they should have, more of these to come in later mixes including the sublime Love Is Always on My Mind.
Most of you will already know You are My Starship and Standing Right Here, they need little introduction.
I’ve included a few more obscure releases from The Charisma Band, Purple Reign and Marie Greens crossover tune. We finish with the sublime Cloud of Sunshine by Jae Mason.

Podcast 9
Another week another podcast coming to you from the rainy city, Manchester UK.
This week as usual a selection of soulful music from across the decades and genres. A little bit of soulful house including the new relesae form the Dave Lee's Sunburst Band, the LP is due to drop soon, also the Frankie Knuckles mix of Hercules and Love Affair's Blind, one of those tunes that's you'll either love or hate mainly due to the vocals of Anthony Hegarty from Anthony and the Johnsons, certainly not tthe usual vocal style you's associate with soulful house but all the better for it in my opinion.
I was pleased to see Mr Bobby Cutchins page on podomatic, I pleased to hear that he's still making the music he loves (you can check it out for yourself www.myspace.com/bobrobmusic). It was kind enough to take the time to answer a question I emailed him recently. Some of you will know that Lasso originally released his version of 'I Did It Again' on a 45 then subsequently another version was released a few years later by Jesse Henderson, this is what he had to say. ''When my contract with Lasso Records expired and I decided not to extend it, the owner decided to take the tracks that he had from my sessions and put Jesse's voice in place of mine. Peter Brown came into the picture and did a disco mix of the track and voila! The new version was born. They used the very same tracks as I did with the same background singers and orchestra but they just added the disco effects.''
I hope you enjoy the rest of the music I've selected this week, plenty more to come in the forthcoming weeks.

Off we go again with a varied but still super soulful selection. Sydney Joe Qualls excellent LP features not only my choice ‘Bad Risk’ but also ‘I Didn’t Do This’, much loved in both the Modern and Northern Soul circles, until recently an LP only track it’s been re-issued on a 45 by Expansion, who have also issued a compilation of his finest work.
A recent thread on www.soul-source.co.uk has inspired me to dig out some 2-steppers including Collins and Collins version of (Harold Melvin and Sharon Paige’s) You Know How To Make Me Feels So Good, we’ve also got two lovely tracks from Freda Payne and Solar Source. Perfect Touch’s What Goes Around probably doesn’t have the beat to qualify as a 2-stepper but all the same it is a gorgeous piece of indie soul.
I’ve also selected two off kilter reggae flavoured disco records, High Feelings and Music Makes the World Go Round. The Hamilton Bros tune has been re-edited from the vocal and instrumental parts. More disco from Bill Brandon: We Fell In Love While Dancing, as well as this 45 there’s also a rare 45 bonus disc, and the super rare 12” which has Lorraine Johnson’s versions of The More You Want The More You Get on the flip side!
Sydney Joe Qualls: Bad Risk (So Sexy, 20th Century LP)
Lillian Alexander: A Dream Without You (Reynolds 7”)
Freda Payne: Tell Me Please (Supernatural High, Capitol LP)
Hamilton Brothers: Music Makes The World Go Round (AIGT re-edit)

Solar Source: Now’s The Time (AVI 12”)

Collins and Collins: You Know How To Make Me Feel So Good (ST, A&M LP)
Trinita: High Feeling (Stairway 12”)
Perfect Touch: What Goes Around (Celebrity 7”)
I'm losing count, it could be 7 or maybe 11. Here are some more selections currently featuring on the all in good time turntables, some new some old some old but new to me, thats how we like them.
I'm late as usual these days on new house releases about 18 months in this case, but nonetheless better late than never on Larry Heard's You Rock me on the legendary Alleviated label. The flip side The Sun Can't Comapre has been making waves on the deep and soulful house scene and features on the next Lust compilation, put together by Joey Negro (Dave Lee) , however it's You Rock Me with the nagging piano hook, strings and simple vocals has really hit the mark with me.
Brothers and Sisters: Nobody Is Gonna Turn Us Round is a heft slice of psych soul, part 2 gets even more wigged out as the producers turn the phasers and delay up to maximum, most notable in my memery because when I was listening to it in the record shop the owner came over to ask if I was OK after I'd listened to it 10 times in a row.
The new Million Dollar Orchestra LP is worth picking up out now on BBE records. I've already given props to Al Kent who put this together as a labour of love with real musicans, not a computer in sight! Keep on Doin Whatcha Doin owes a little to Brenda Harris I suspect but the addition of the strings and dancefloor friendly breakdowns puts it in a class of it's own. Canal Street Bus Stop forom the same LP is of equal class. Al Kent is also an excellent DJ, takea moment to listen to some of his mixes on his site www.milliondollardisco.com
Willie Hutch needs little introduction, writer producer and artist of the highest calibre, including one of my all time favorites, Easy Does It (an excellent song to listen to whilst doing a spot of DIY) the Soul Potrait LP is brimming with lovely music, I 've included my favorite of the bunch
Lots more good stuff this week, including Grace Jones and the Glitter Band (who'd have thought it)
Art Wilson: I Know We Can Make It (Alexander St 7”)
The Two Tons: Never Like This (Fantasy 7”)
Jeff and Aleta: Love Touch SRI 7”)
Grace Jones: Sorry (Beam Junction 12”)
Larry Heard presents Mr White: You Rock Me (Alleviated 12”)
The Brothers and Sisters: Nobody is Gonna Turn Us Round (part1) (Toddlin Town 7”)
Colours: Am I Gonna Be The One (First Take 12”)
Brenda Harris: Making Love (Dream 12”)
The Million Dollar Orchestra: Keep On Doin’ Watcha Doin’ (Better Days, BBE LP)
CJ & Co: Sure Can’t Go To The Moon (Devils Gun, Westbound LP)
Glitter Band: Makes You Blind (Bell 7”)
Randy Crawford: Don’t Get Caught (In Love’s Triangle (Columbia 7”)
Destiny: So Much Love (RCA 7”)
Leon Collins: Knowing I Love You (Elf 7”)
Willie Hutch: Your Love Keeps Liftin’ Me Higher (Soul Portrait. RCA LP)
Hope you enjoy this week's selection, next up, hopefully in time for Valentine's Day a little bit of the big man, Barry White.
More of a gospel theme rather than a pure gospel mix, this week we’re casting the net far and wide and hauling in a bountiful catch of soul, disco, house, boogie and folk as well as landing some straight up gospel. You should have seen the ones that that got away.
The Gospel Truth were not in reality a gospel band indeed to avoid being labelled as such after the success of ‘Uphill Peace of Mind’ they changed their name to Facts of Live, either way it’s a great accessible piece of music.
Two bona fide house classics from Donna Allen and Kenny Bobien. Anyone who has seen Mr Bobien perform live will know this man puts so much soul into his performances, as well as having provided one of house music greatest anthems, Rise Above The Storm he’s also released a full CD of gospel music.
Gloria Spencer makes Kenny Bobien look like a lightweight, weighing in at over 600lbs she was billed on her albums as the worlds largest gospel singer. ‘I Got It’ was recorded at Sigma studios and produced and arranged by Bobby Martin, so you know straight off it’s going to be class. Shirley Caesar another gospel act provides a version of the Eddie Kendricks anthem ‘He’s a Friend’ Following on the disco connection
a couple of disco flavoured tunes, the first from Dan Greer with ‘Love Is The Message’, not as you might think a MFSB cover and the second from Gloster Williams and Master Control with ‘No Cross, No Crown’, I’ve heard that there’s also a 12” of this.
We round things of with Linda Lewis’ Reach For The Truth, the song alone, let alone the picture of her on the LP is enough to make a grown mad go weak at he knees (or perhaps convert even the most ardent sinner).
The Gospel Truth: Uphill Peace Of Mind (Kayvette 7”)
Gloria Spencer: I Got It (Jay-Walking 7”)

Buddah Mix Part 1
1) Curtis Mayfield: Right On For The Darkness
2) Melba Moore: Ain’t No Love Lost
3) Norman Connors feat Phillip Mitchell: Once I’ve Been There (12” mix)
4) Black Ivory: Mainline
5) Gladys Knight & The Pips: Better Than Good Time
6) Ben Vereen: Signed, Sealed, Delivered
7) Phyllis Hyman: Living Inside Your Love
8) Modulations: Hopelessly In Love
9) Fresh Flavour: Without You Baby I’m Loser
10) MVPs: Turning My Heartbeat Up
11) Jimmy Jackson: Footsteps In The Shadows (LP version)
12) Aquarian Dream: Phoenix
13) Andrea True Connection: Fill Me Up (Heart to Heart) (AIGT re-edit)
Founded in 1967 and originally putting out ‘bubble gum’ pop records, the label came into it’s own in the mid to late 70’s and was fuelled onwards by the input of Norman Connors who joined the company in 1976. Buddah was at the forefront of the fledgling disco scene and was one of the early labels to produce 12”s, it also released some seminal Blaxplotation LPs
This mix and the subsequent instalments mainly concentrates on the era of the ‘brown’ Buddah label 1972-1978, however a few tunes creep in from the following incarnation when the label featured the capitol letter B.
Over the years Buddah featured legendary artists of the disco era such as The Trammps, Phyllis Hyman, Melba Moore, Van McCoy, Leroy Burgess (Black Ivory) and Gladys Knight and The Pips as well as many artists like Jae Mason, who have since criminally faded into obscurity but still produced some beautiful soul music. Other artists also appeared briefly on Buddah at some point in their recording career for example, Chic originally released Dance, Dance, Dance on Buddah before moving to Atlantic and Cubie and the Stairsteps introduced a fresh faced Keni Burke to the world, no bad thing in my opinion.
Curtis Mayfield’s early association with Buddah is evident throughout the story, not only did he release music on the label but Curtom was also distributed by Buddah, as was Sussex Records (we’ll hear more from both of these labels in the future). Artists on Buddah covered many of Mayfield’s songs and he also wrote specifically for them, the first mix features Melba Moore’s version of his Ain’t No Love Lost’ which was also released by Patti Jo to great acclaim on the underground scene both then and today.
Andrea True started her career in the Adult film industry, she co-penned and initially finaced her disco pop hit More More More with Greg Diamond in 1976 which was then remixed by Tom Moulton and proved a big hit in discos world wide (the drum break towards the end was also sampled by Len: Steal My Sunshine). The original promo 12” release is collectable and sought after however the tune has never been a favourite of mine, instead I’ve included Fill Me Up (Heart to Heart) which is at least if not more cheesy but I’ve always has a soft spot for it. Fill Me Up was also faithfully covered by Caress on Roulette Records.
Norman Connors should need little introduction, he was responsible for signing Melba Moore and Aquarian Dream . He also recorded in his own right for Buddah perhaps most notably on his album You Are My Starship which featured the title track and also The Creator Has A Master Plan ( featuring Pharoah Sanders). His LP Romantic Journey contains the all time classic Once I’ve Been There, sung by Phillip Michell, also released as a 12”, like a lot of the early Buddah 12” its hard to come by and very collectable. Once I’ve Been There was successfully covered by Dr Bob Jones’ East West Connection on Chilli Funk, another piece of vinyl worth seeking out.
Buddah’s releases also made waves on the Northern soul as well as the Disco scene with tracks like The MVPs: Turning My Heartbeat Up. I don’t know if Jimmy Jackson’s Footsteps in The Shadows ever got any Northern plays but it sounds like it could have, the LP version knocks spots of the 45 release with the extended drum sections and effects, shame about the slightly dodgy edit at the end.
Over the next few months I’ll be posting up at least another two episodes featuring Buddah records…’for your disco pleasure’

Welcome along to the latest update, once again lots of great music.
I've recently been tidying up the record room and clearing out some records destined for ebay or the charity shop, during this I came across the Phyllis Hyman tune which opens this podcast which had slipped my mind and almost made it into the discard pile, I'm pleased to say that it fell onto the turntable instead and is well worth a few minutes of your time
I've had a rare pleasure of hitting a record shop or two this week, two fruits of my digging are the Silver Platinum and Gold and Barbara Blake tracks.
Paulette Reaves: It's In Me released on PIP records but affilated to TK Disco has been stuck in my head for weeks, she's also released music on Blue Candle and is reasonably well respected on the Modern Soul scene. This track is out and out disco boogie and I love it.
Charles Earland provides a jazz funk cover version of the Eddie Kendricks classic Girl You Need A Change of Mind. You can expect a Eddie Kendricks themed podcast soon.
The very collectable Disco International label is sought after by disco fans worldwide, Delicious by the Dupress has been comped recently and still sounds superb with it's stomping pace and soaring strings. Hard to find on a 12" these days, but worth tracking down as well as a few others on the same label like LTG Exchange's Corazon.
Freddie North provides a version of My Whole World's Ended, perhaps better known by David Ruffin, personally I think if you don;t feel this you should give up now.
I've finished this week with Segment of Time's: Song to The System on Sussex Records, a label distributed by the mighty mighty Buddah Records soon to be featured in an AIGT podast coming soon, keeping it soulful ...the only way we know how

Once again we’re covering all the spectrums of soulful music, from Boogie to House through to Disco and Northern.
Included today is Carmen McRae’s version of the Skip Scarborough penned 'Can't Hide Love'; plenty of artists have tried their hand at this track most notably in my opinion Creative Source, but also Earth, Wind and Fire, Art Webb, Hodges, James & Smith. Norman Whitfield protégés Undisputed Truth provide I Can’t Get Enough Of Your Love, as usual peddling their ‘psychedelic soul’ sound.
The Masters at Work remix BeBe Winans’ Brand New Dance, keep an eye out for the 4/4 remix of BeBe and Stevie Wonder’s live version of Jesus Children of America, there’s no information on my copy but it’s rumoured to have been retouched by Blaze. Dennis Ferrer has been making waves on the soulful house scene for some time but most conspicuously in the last year or two, here he’s teamed up with Anthony Flanagan on Madhouse Records. Flanagan has also cut a fantastic track, Never Lost Faith, for Chilli Funk records with UC Heights; personally I’d like to hear a lot more from him.
The Modulations track is the flip to I Can't Fight Your Love, their LP on Buddah is worth hunting out for the latter and the track Hopelessly In Love With You.
Thelma Houston’s eponymously titled LP for Mowest contains Nothing Left To Give beautiful song which rounds up today’s selection, the LP also contains another personal favourite, And I Thought You Loved Me, well worth tracking down but make sure you get the UK or German issues, the US issue has a different tracklisting!
Sadly Mel Cheren passed away this month, founder of Westend Records and doyen of the NYC disco scene, he was considered by many to be the pioneer of disco. I’ve included Northend’s Kind of Life, one of my personal favourites from the Westend back catalogue. There’s a great tribute mix to Mel Cheren by the multi-talented Al Kent on MillionDollarDisco..
The Modulations: Your Love Has Me Locked Up (Buddah 7”)
Baby Brother: Your Love Has Me Wanting You (ST. Cotillion LP)
Glenn Garry: I Need You In My Life (PPL 7”)

Carmen McRae: Can’t Hide Love (Can’t Hide Love, Blue Note LP)
BeBe Winans: Brand New Dance (MAW remix) (Motown 12”)
Dennis Ferrer feat Anthony Flanagan: So Beautiful (Madhouse 12”)
Natural Four: Baby Come On (Heaven Right Here on Earth, Curtom LP)
First Choice: Chances Come Around (Delusions, Salsoul LP)
Choice Four: Come Down To Earth (AIGT re-edit) (RCA 12”)
Northend: Kind of Life (Kind of Love) (Westend 12”)
Thelma Houston: Nothing Left To Give (ST. Mowest LP UK)
Still warming up....plenty of good stuff to come, this is a short and simple compilation of laid back soulful Sunday sounds, hope you enjoy.
The Fingers Inc LP is well worth tracking down, it still sounds great almost 20 years later. Ace Spectrum are best known these days for Don't Send Nobody Else, but the 12" mix of Live and Learn gets me every time with haunting string lines. Lots of nice stuff in between these two including JNB: I’ll Be The One the B side to a version of Kansas City Woman, which makes you wonder how it was ever recorded!
Fingers Inc: So Glad (Another Side LP Jack Trax)
EKG: Give Me Love (7” Roadrunners)
